Prince Caspian

I feel like the screenwriters for the new Prince Caspian movie haven't read the book since they were kids. Major scenes taken out, major scenes and plot twists added in. The movie starts about half way through the book. The horn is used at the wrong time. Entire fight sequences in the movie never take place in the book.Major parts of the allegory are taken out while new parts are added in.

Not a bad movie, just not really based on the book. Way too violent, and tried being LotR too much.

8:37

At school we are doing the Presidential Fitness Testing for gym class. In the Fall, the students hated it. So, we decided to do it again. This time, they seemed to be looking forward to it a little more, maybe just to get it done with. So, I gave them the extra motivation of the Beat Mr. Yenter Challenge. Now, they are not only competing against national averages; they are competing against me. This will be interesting.

On Tuesday, we started with the shuttle run (run 30 feet, pick up a block, run back, set down the block, run back, pick up a block, run back). I ran it in 9.78 seconds. Only one student beat me. The 8th grade girl ran it in exactly 9.78 seconds, so we gave it to her.

On Thursday, with much prayer and stretching, I ran the mile with the students. I ran it in 8:37. My goal was to run the entire time and to get 8:30 or less. I ran the whole time and came close on the second. So far (the two oldest students haven't run it yet), three students beat me in the mile - two 9 year old boys and a 10 year old girl. One boy ran a 7:45 mile, but he still had a lot of energy at the end, so he should have ran a 7:00 mile. the younger students only had to run a 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile based on age, so we gave it to all the students who had a better split time than me (even though I was "pacing" myself so I wouldn't die).

We still have three more events: push-ups, sit-ups, and sit-and-reach. I might win the push-ups. There will probably be a couple of students that will beat me in the sit-ups. I'm going to feel bad for the one or two students that won't beat me in the sit-and-reach. I'll be lucky to get a -1.0 in the sit-and-reach, while most of the girls are between +3.0 and +9.5!

Side note: Only three more weeks of school left. At 4 days per week, that's 12 days. Of those 12 days, we have a half day field trip, a full day field trip, a cleaning day, and the last day of school is a half day with the closing ceremonies. We've been counting it down more than the students.

A Song for a Quarter

We recently bought a LOT of discs on BMG. I realized during the purchase that I had not bought anything from BMG since college. I actually said yes to the Featured Selection. As a result of that, as well as my previous purchase of box sets, I was able to get 11 cds and 3 bonus dvds for $47. that's amazing! That's a little over $3 per disc, about $.25 per song. Here's what we ordered:

Hillsongs - Saviour King
Hillsongs - Mighty to Save
United - United We Stand (w/ bonus dvd)
United - All of the Above (w/ bonus dvd)
Gateway Worship - Living for You (w/ bonus dvd)
Jennifer Knapp - The Way I Am
The Temptations - Emperors of Soul (5 disc box set)

The Temptations box set is being shipped separately, so it will be a little bit before that comes, but we got the others in the mail this weekend. I've only listened to some of the cds, but my favorites so far are the Gateway Worship cd and Jennifer Knapp, but those were the givens. Saviour King was the featured selection, but I haven't listened to it yet. The rest of the Hillsongs and United cds are about as expected - some really good songs, some decent songs, and some lame/annoying songs.

Top 5 Songs I Bought These CDs for:
5. Mighty to Save (Hillsongs - Mighty to Save)
4. The More I Seek You (Gateway Worship - Living for You)
3. The Stand (United - United We Stand)
2. Lead Me to the Cross (United - All of the Above) I love playing this song at church, so it stirs up in me the feelings of power-filled worship settings.
1. Revelation Song (Gateway Worship - Living for You) Lauren at church has an almost identical if not better voice than Kari Jobe so I knew this would be great, but the male harmony singer is incredible and adds a lot to this song. This is a MUST GET song!

You know, the one thing that connects all of these songs besides the fact that they are songs we've done at church is that Lauren leads most of them. She's got such an incredible voice, it will be amazing to see what doors God opens for her. We've got a new keyboardist who is writing incredible songs. One of our drummers is the best I've heard. A friend of ours could be a professional violinist. It's just amazing to be surrounded by such gifted musicians and so many people that are passionate about worship God more than they are about promoting themselves.

P.S. There. I blogged.

Hello Old Friend

I've got to blog just to get back into it. Here it is:

Christmas break was much appreciated and much needed.
Christmas with fam and friends was great.
OneThing was enjoyable, inspiring, and interesting.
New Year's Eve was bittersweet as we lost a good friend to an odd complication to surgery at quarter to midnight.
New Year's Day was an odd, cold, incredibly windy drive back to have to start school the next day.
The first days back at school were a rollercoaster in the classroom for our students.
Katy was sick for a couple of days making for some very long days for me at school, church, and home, taking care of twice as much as usual.
Second Quarter ended with only one F; the fallout has yet to be seen.
Graduation from the leadership class we were taking and co-teaching was an interesting feeling.
A good friend visited at the same time as some fam. The friend is moving to the area, which should be great.
Less than two weeks until the Young Adults retreat. About a month ago we announced that the youth and the "adults" would be having the same retreat at the same place at the same time. Some of the teachings and all of the worship will be together. Katy and I get to lead the worship for the whole retreat, and I get to speak to the whole group. Really excited but slightly nervous.

Hopefully more meaningful blogs to follow.

Upton Boy

We were able to go see Jason Upton in concert on Sunday night. It was a great concert. I struggle, though, when I go to a concert of someone who I know for their worship songs and their concert is more their personal experience songs. It was still very good, and God was definitely present and active in the room. We've been listening to "Beautiful People" and "Faith," two of Jason's cds, ever since.

Some notes on Jason Upton:
5. He's so good at playing the piano that he can make a three chord song sound incredible.
4. He's so "raw." That's the word I've heard multiple people use in regards to his personality and song writing.
3. He's got a high tenor voice but without sounding feminine.
2. Occasionally on his cds, he sounds like Steve Camp. In a good way.
1. The most amazing thing about Jason is his uncanny resemblance to Dave Graf. they could be twins. Now imagine Dave being a paino playing, high tenor singing, worship leader. Amazing.

The Big OT

I have been highly offended by the Chevrolet commercials I have seen for the last year or so. "This is our country." A bunch of white farmboys returning home from war for the last hundred years. Who is "us" in "our country?" White people? Rural Americans? Soldiers? At least the new Chevy commercial I saw today has 3 or 4 black people out of 30-40 people shown in the commercial. Sure, I don't think I've ever seen an Asian-American driving a truck, but these commercials seem to go past market-driven advertisement. Maybe the next Chevy commercial will be filmed with some good ole boys on the Trail of Tears, the Birmingham Bridge, along the Rio de Janeiro, or in Chinatown. Or driving in the Middle East.

That reminds me. Like mother, like daughter apparently. America broke out of colonialism only to start our own overseas. Manifest Destiny meets Monroe Doctrine meets Alexandrian Empire.

Surpassing the Energizer Bunny

This week has been incredibly busy. Last week was the end of the first quarter of school. That meant getting everything in order with students so no one was failing any classes. I had something every night at church except Friday. Friday was field trip day at school, with three groups going to three places. My group included ALL of the boys and one father. We went to a nearby airplane museum. Saturday included hanging out with our friends Nate and Natalie and their 4 year-old Abby and their 4 month-old Eli. During this time, I got some phone calls from Caribou saying I was supposed to be at work, which I didn't know. So, I missed a shift. In my conversation with my boss, wherein she was apologizing to me about the shift, I made the final step of ending my job at Caribou. She was sad to hear I was leaving, but it put the store in a better situation since I was more of an inconvenience (I was only working once every six weeks). Sunday, I helped lead worship at church. It was the first time in close to ten years that I had played guitar without singing and that I had played in someone else's worship team. I came home from church to find out that the NFL on TV is only going down hill. This year, if it is not the Vikings game, neither Fox nor CBS will air the game, even though we live less than 30 miles from WI. This only added to my frustration from the week before when Katy and I had planned our Monday around watching the Packer game, only to realize (for the second year in a row) that ESPN has stolen football away from the common man. Monday was filled with grading every class and filling out report cards. Tuesday, we started parent-teacher conferences in the morning and after school. Then, we led worship Tuesday night and I spoke and our Young Adults Ministry. Our Young Adults pastors went to the hospital at midnight that night as she was going into labor with their first child. Luke Daniel Dorn was born 7lbs.6oz. at 3:16pm on November 7. Wednesday was more conferences and finishing up some work for our school Book Clubs on Thursday. Thursday was more conferences, our gym being filled with tables and chairs that we had to take down and set up during our gym class just in order to play, and doing some shopping for our science class on Friday. Friday was, in comparison, much less stressful. We even had time to watch Transformers last night before bed. Today, we are leading worship for a RAIN lunch meeting (RAIN is Resurrection Apostolic International Network, the international ministry that our pastors oversee and of which our church is the flagship). We have guest speaker Harold Eberle in for the weekend. So, as staff at the church, we also get to go to a dinner meeting with him tonight as well as a time of impartation. Tomorrow, we are probably teaching our leadership class before church, since our pastors are sruviving their first days at home with Luke. Things will finally slow down tomorrow afternoon, when the Packers find a way (somehow) to shut down Adrian Peterson and jumpstart their own running game. It's nice to know you can be dead last in the league in rushing and still be one of the top five teams overall. thank you, Brett Favre.
